Stephen Hurley has been working in Canada’s education space for 35 years, as a classroom teacher, curriculum consultant and teacher educator. Stephen is passionate about supporting and nurturing conversations about education across the country. He’s also the chief catalyst behind voicEd Radio—a 24/7 radio station dedicated to deepening the way we talk about education in Canada.
I met Stephen Hurley when we both sat on the board of Access Copyright, a non-profit, national organization that represents tens of thousands of Canadian writers, visual artists and publishers, and their works. Through agreements with sister organizations around the world, it also represents the works of hundreds of thousands of foreign creators and publishers.
My young adult novel-in-verse, Stay, intrigued Stephen as both a teacher and a parent. He invited me to chat with him about the book. Students and teachers often ask me for more information about the process of writing Stay, and thanks to Stephen’s good questions, we chatted about this and many other aspects of writing.
